Hamilton is New Zealand's fourth largest city. It is situated about an hour a half's drive south of Auckland, forty minutes from the west coast at Raglan and just over an hour's drive from the north-east coast at Tauranga.
The city has a population of 131,000 at the last census. The city centre is compact so nothing is too far a travelling distance whether by car, bus or on foot. The mighty Waikato river flows through the heart of the city, providing a beautiful backdrop and the scene of the annual
Great Race. Two useful websites to browse are
Hamilton City Council and
Visit Hamilton.
If you're a rugby fan (and you'd almost have to be in Hamilton) Hamilton is home to the '
Mooloos', the Waikato provincial rugby team, and the
Chiefs, one of the three North Island Super 14 rugby franchises. Hamilton is also the home of the New Zealand round of the
V8 Supercars championship and the Waikato Bay of Plenty
Magic netball team. And only a short distance away, at Lake Karapiro, Rowing New Zealand will be hosting the
World Rowing Championships in 2010.
If sport is not your thing, then within a short travel distance are several wineries, including
Mystery Creek and
Vilagrad, and within thirty minutes drive there's the very 'English' town of Cambridge, with its tree-lined town centre and delightful boutique shops. 'Provincial' Hamilton might be in location - but it's anything but in terms of
what's going on!
Hamilton is the home of the
University of Waikato, a leading and progressive tertiary education institution which advocates an important bi-cultural (Māori and non-Māori) approach to studies. Alongside the University is
Wintec, the Waikato Institute of Technology, which provides vocational-based education and training, particularly in the technological, health and creative industries.
In case you needed convincing of what Hamilton has to offer, in the July 2006 issue North and South magazine published an article on "Hot Hamilton": you can view this article
